Masterfully hand-carved from what must have been a colossal solid piece of monkey pod hardwood. This nude figural sculpture weighs around 250lbs. Although our photos are an adequate representation, the authentic real life presentation of this work of art is truly jaw dropping. Two lovers entangled in an embrace that seems so detailed and authentic that the subjects seem as though they were real people turned into hardwood by a shaman. For example, the muscles on the male subjects back are rippled and two knots in the wood somehow situated themselves in the middle of each shoulder blade with concentric circles waving out from the center. It’s easy to gush over this sculpture when you stop to consider the skill and time required to manifest something so substantial. Of course it’s not just a beautiful sculpture, it’s also a practical glass top coffee table.
Unfortunately, we know very little about the artist, date or origin. Our best guess based on the type of hardwood, is most likely Southeast Asia, during the later half of the 20th century.
